Modern Primitives Era and Recent Biohacking & Neuralink
Reports from a Japanese Journalist
The amazing report on body modification culture from Japan, the birthplace of cyberpunk!
Ryoichi Keroppy Meada has been reporting on body modification culture around the world for over 30 years since the 1990s. He became interested in the subject thanks to the seminal “Modern Primitives” book published in 1989, and his first worldwide reports involved meeting, interviewing, and photographing the people featured in that publication in order to publish a full-color version of the book in Japan.
In 1997, he published the first volume of the “Complete Pierce & Tattoo Manual,’’ followed by a second volume in 1999. In this class, Keroppy will share interviews and hundreds of photos from these two books, which feature such legendary figures as Fakir Musafar, Jim Ward, Ron Athey, Ed Hardy, Leo Zulueta, and more. His exhaustive photo archive also includes the early body piercing schools of Fakir Musafar and The Gauntlet in the 1990s, the APP conference in 2001, Jon Cobb and Shannon Larratt of BME, Implants innovator Steve Haworth and many more in Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, London, and beyond.
The class will also announce the latest reports on the “Asian Piercers Meet Up” International Body Piercing Conference in Tokyo that started in 2024, the newest report as the first Japanese journalist to meet directly with the first patient of Neuralink, as well as the Human Augmentation Summit in Roatán, Honduras.
“Modern Primitives Era,” a Japanese/English bilingual photo book by Ryoichi Keroppy Maeda, will also be available at the class!
