Piercing is not math

Setting Realistic Expectations for your Client

Sometimes, piercing doesn’t heal / act / behave as it would be expected, even thought we did all the precautions – client is healthy, procedure was spotless, jewelry great, they are taking care of it, everything. And it is acting up.

Sometimes a piercing that usually heals 6-9 months won’t heal for 2 years.

Sometimes a client will have no problems wearing silver, coated stuff, acrylic shits, but will be allergic to 18kt gold.

Sometimes a client will do all their piercings by themselves, with a gun or in a really bad studio and have no problems, and then get pierced by a professional with good knowledge, great jewelry, aseptic technique, and have problems with that piercing!

Sometimes the downsizing is possible in a month, sometimes in 6 months.

Sometimes a piercing will heal great, but will also always be annoying, uncomfortable to sleep on, too much sensation, all kinds of things!

Sometimes we can predict some things. Sometimes we can find a cause for the problem.
Sometimes we can fix it with better jewelry (either material, shape or size), better aftercare routine…

But sometimes, piercing (healing it, wearing it) – is not logical or mathematical.

Human bodies are wonderfully strange and working on them as canvases puts us piercer in a weird situations.
It is really important not to wear pink glasses all the time – it is our responsibility to set realistic expectations for our clients who trust us to poke their bodies.

Sometimes, clients are really not aware of what a piercing is. They think of it as a sparkly thing and are most afraid of the pain during the procedure, but that’s it.

It’s not all sparkles and butterflies. Piercings are annoying. You catch them on clothes, hair, everything. Say goodbye to normal, carefree side sleeping. Hugging with little kids or your dog licking your ear. crazy wild sex might need some caution haha. It is not quantum physics, but you need to adapt for healing, maybe even for wearing it. It is our responsibility as professionals to set realistic expectations, not to scare our clients away, but to set them up for a successful life with piercings.
