Designing for the Body
A Practical Approach to Tattoo Composition and Application
In this 90-minute session, Maya Goldfinch explores the essential relationship between tattoo design and the human body. Drawing on over a decade of experience and a background in academic art, Maya will guide participants through key principles of anatomical placement, body flow, and the dynamics of form — helping artists create tattoos that are both visually powerful and harmoniously integrated with the client’s physique.
The lecture will cover the process of developing custom designs tailored to specific body areas, with a focus on drawing for tattooing, managing contrast, detail, and scale. Maya will also share practical insights on working directly with the skin — including stencil application, positioning for complex body parts, working with large-scale stencils, and freehand techniques.
With live demonstrations on a model, this session offers hands-on strategies that transcend tattoo styles — making it valuable for artists working in realism, blackwork, graphic, ornamental, neo-traditional, and beyond.
Whether you’re refining your drawing practice or looking to deepen your understanding of body-based design, this lecture will offer tools to strengthen both your creative process and technical execution.
