Suspengineering I: Fundamentals of Mechanics for Safety and Comfort

Mechanics are a constant presence in hooksuspension and go beyond simply keeping a suspendee in the air.

We’ll use fundamentals of mechanics and safety, cases and illustrations to explore:

  • Forces & energy + structured interpretation of realistic situations
  • Considerations and calculations for common scenarios like installing softpoints, rigging spinning beams and positioning the rig.
  • the effect of different riggings on the skin.
  • “Impact” as the most dangerous mechanical phenomenon in body suspension

This course is relevant for body suspension practitioners of all experience levels and touches on a broad subject to spark questions and exploration, inspired by an engineering approach.

Since mechanics and material science together create what happens in a situation, it might be interesting to also attend Suspengineering II.

This is the first edition of this course. Your feedback is extremely valuable and will contribute to a master’s thesis in mechanical engineering focused on researching body suspension.
