Suspengineering I: Fundamentals of Mechanics for Safety and Comfort

Mechanics are constantly present in hooksuspension and go beyond simply keeping a person in the air. It is natural to form a perception of forces from how things physically feel while suspending, but pain (or comfort) does not match tension in the skin which is where we need to use physics as a vital tool for safety considerations.

This is the second edition of this course. With a lot of feedback from the first edition, content was reselected or deleted and more illustrations and examples were added. Ergonomic principles were included to make the theory more applicable.

We will talk about:

  • Forces & energy + structured interpretation of realistic situations
  • Considerations and calculations for common scenarios like installing softpoints, rigging spinning beams and positioning the rig.
  • An applied way of choosing/motivating a certain rigging based on ergonomic principles

This course is relevant for body suspension practitioners of all experience levels and aims to spark questions and exploration, inspired by an engineering approach.

Since the sum of mechanics and material science creates the physical result, it might be interesting to also attend Suspengineering II.
