Ancient Bodies and Complex Symbols: The Origins of Body Modification

Body decoration and modification are practices as old as humanity, leaving behind archaeological evidence extending back at least 140,000 years before present. In this program, archaeologist Aaron Deter-Wolf surveys the global archaeological record to share the earliest evidence of humans deliberately altering their bodies—including the most ancient examples of body painting, scarification, piercing, tattooing, and skeletal remodeling—and explore why body decoration is one of the behaviors that makes us human.
