How Has Fascination Been Represented?

In this class, we will study the image of traditional Japanese tattoos, which have fascinated not only Japanese people but also Westerners. People who are interested in body modification and tattoos will have seen or heard some knowledge about the iconography of Japanese tattoos. However, the issue is that regardless of the authenticity of the information, whether it is real or fantasy, the image surrounding traditional Japanese tattoos has powerfully aroused people’s desires. Therefore, I will present how the image sources of Japanese tattoos have been represented, such as ukiyo-e, kabuki and gidayū, Japanese fine art, and yakuza movies.
